Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Nothing is comfortable about moving across the country, and the moment you realize your independent youthful optimism will be challenged by the nay-saying haters, the better prepared you'll be.

Once you even HINT at your want to move to Southern California to others, you are guaranteed to be hit by 1 of the 4 phrases, if not all.
I don't think the negativity is fueled consciously, I believe that a lot of the "feedback" from the peanut gallery is derived from their subconsciousness. It's as if they're confused as to why you're doing what you are OR that just isn't the way they would do it. Thats okay, that's why we're all individual humans. And the rest are, yes, just plain jealous.
I think that everyone has to deal with this in some facet of their lives. A few weeks ago I saw a Facebook post from a friend giving her audience the PSA that she does not need negative feedback about her kids playing hockey. "Its so cold, expensive, early AM practices, smelly gear, lots of traveling." Are things that she heard on a weekly basis that were killin' her vibe.
Truth is, these comments probably won't stop, and they will come from those that are closest to you because they want to make sure you've considered these things before moving, even though you're a completely responsible adult (well, most of us anyway).
I'm here to tell you to IGNORE THESE EXCUSES. You may even get to the point where you start believing these things to be true so much so that you are second guessing this decision. STOP IT RIGHT NOW.
Sure, San Diego is expensive, but we have jobs. Plane tickets are expensive, but these are the new birthday and Christmas gifts from family members. This is the land of singles, but we go out right along side them. But you know what nobody is talking about?
You can watch a ridiculously amazing sunset every night.
Seasonal depression will barely exist.
Sun, Sun and more Sun.
You will absolutely become more health conscious, which is invaluable.
This is a city full of FRIENDLY young people and young families.
Did we mention the weather??
The city is full of start-ups, amazing companies, and entrepreneurial minds.
Work life balance is extremely valued here.
The dogs are EVERYWHERE.
Restaurants galore, and if you don't score 4+ stars on Yelp you're probably already out of business.
There is a neighborhood in the city fit for anyone and everyone.
